Founder’s Conundrum: Keep it, Sell it, or Pass it on?

Peter Leach

You have built a successful business, and you still enjoy being owner, CEO and chief problem solver, all rolled into one - but one question has been nagging at the back of your head: what comes next? Most founders face this pivotal moment at one point or another: "should I continue running the company, sell it, or pass it on to the next generation?" Each choice comes with financial, strategic and (not least) emotional challenges that can shape your legacy. The decision is rarely straightforward. Keeping the business means staying at the helm, adapting to new challenges, and reinvesting for growth. Selling could unlock financial freedom, but at what cost to your vision and sense of who you are? And passing it on to family or employees -- while appealing in theory -- raises questions of leadership, succession and long-term prospects.

Peter will conclude with 3-5 key, actionable takeaways.

What Can Trusted Advisors Do to Help Facilitate a Successful Inter-Generational Transfer?—Case Studies

Steve Sokić, Dr. Babetta von Albertini, and Dr. Ineke A. Koele

Attorneys and fiduciaries often work with families over decades. During this prolonged time, they can become a trusted advisor of the patriarch or matriarch. Opportunities may arise when the client asks the trusted advisor for their input on an inter-generational transfer, often with the lead-in: "what do other families do in this type of situation". Ineke will lead a discussion with Steve and Babetta who will each discuss a case study of an inter-generational transfer and will share (i) what went well, (ii) what could have been done better, and (iii) lessons learned.

Practical Tools to Leverage your Family Values and Prosper across Generations: a Family Galaxy Perspective

Marco Stevanato and Alfredo De Massis

Alfredo will lead a discussion with Marco (G3) on how entrepreneurial families can continue to prosper across generations. As senior, current, and next generations rise, many are venturing into new orbits—launching initiatives in philanthropy, venture building, impact investing, or purpose-driven careers. Others are founding their own family office, family incubator, family council, or family academy. Alfredo and Marco will explore expanding the entrepreneurial family galaxy: a dynamic ecosystem that stretches far beyond the legacy business to include diverse forms of contribution and leadership. Alfredo and Marco will explore the key challenges within this novel family galaxy perspective and present practical frameworks for effective succession management and long-term prosperity. Join us as we navigate new trajectories, challenge old expectations, and map the stars of a broader, bolder definition of what it means to belong, contribute, and lead in an entrepreneurial family.

Lessons from 300+ Year-Old Family Businesses: How to Align your Stakeholders over Generations

Rania Labaki

What allows certain family businesses to thrive over centuries while others struggle with transitions? This session examines how enduring family businesses design frameworks that: (i) balance tradition with innovation, (ii) align diverse stakeholders, and (iii) channel emotional bonds into constructive stewardship. Based on the latest research and best practices, Rania will draw lessons on: (i) building governance practices, (ii) cultivating responsibility, (iii) strengthening family identification with the business, and (iv) addressing the emotional dynamics that inevitably shape decision-making -- all with the goal of building a sustainable family business across generations.

How to Identify and Train the Next Generation of Family Leaders

Emanuela Musci, Peter Schaub, and Eric Sarasin

We are on the cusp of witnessing the greatest transfer of wealth in history, with a new generation poised to become the stewards of significant family wealth. This makes identifying and cultivating the next generation of family leaders a critical priority for multi-generational families. Eric will lead a discussion with Peter and Emanuela who will share their personal journeys to leadership within their families, offering insights into how they have navigated the complexities of balancing legacy and innovation. Attendees will explore strategies to co-create a shared legacy that resonates across generations, ensuring younger family members are empowered to become not only stewards of the family’s values and traditions but also visionary leaders who can chart a forward-looking path. Learn the key traits of effective nextgen leaders and discover actionable steps to provide them with the education, mentorship, and opportunities needed to thrive.
